The Story of how Alex joined the cigar world

Every cigar enthusiast has a story about their first encounter with the world of premium cigars. For me, Alex, co-host of “The Cigar Guys Podcast,” that journey began at 18, sparked by advice from a family friend and an iconic brand: Padron.
The Initiation
It was a family friend, akin to an aunt, who first suggested I try a cigar. Her words were clear and emphatic: “Now that you’re 18, you can smoke cigars. But remember, if you’re going to smoke, choose Padron. They are the best.” Her husband, a seasoned cigar aficionado, had instilled in her a deep respect for the Padron brand.
With no prior experience in cigars, I took her advice to heart. My destination was the Corona Cigar Co., a local lounge known for its extensive selection. As a novice in a new world, I stepped in and asked for a Padron.
The Padron 1926 Maduro Recommendation
The staff at Corona Cigar Co. recommended the Padron 1926 Maduro – a choice revered among cigar enthusiasts. However, I knew one thing: starting small would be wise. So, I opted for the Padron No. 35, a shorter, 4-inch cigar, perfect for a beginner.
An Unexpected Love Affair
To the surprise of many I’ve shared this story with, my first experience was delightful. The Padron No. 35 was a revelation – rich, complex, yet approachable for me (somehow). Of course, I didn’t know what flavors I was tasting at the time other than “tobacco,” but I knew I enjoyed it. It was so enjoyable that I returned to Corona Cigar Co. later that week, eager to explore more from Padron.
Transitioning to Davidoff
As my palate developed and my curiosity grew, I transitioned from Padron to Davidoff. Davidoff offered a variety that appealed to my evolving tastes. Each cigar was a new chapter in my journey, expanding my understanding and appreciation of cigar making.
Embarking on a Cigar Journey
This initial foray into cigars at Corona Cigar Co. was just the beginning. I ventured to try different brands with unique stories and characters. This exploration was not just about tasting other cigars but about understanding cultures, histories, and the craftsmanship behind each roll.
Final Thoughts
My first cigar experience was more than just a rite of passage; it started a lifelong passion. It taught me the importance of quality, the joy of discovery, and the beauty of taking time to savor the moment. As I continue to explore the vast world of cigars, I always remember that first Padron No. 35 – the cigar that lit the path to my journey in the world of premium cigars.
