Sun Grown Tobacco

Shade Grown Tobacco
On the other hand, shade-grown tobacco is cultivated under cover, shielded from the sun’s direct rays. This is achieved by draping translucent coverings over the plants diffusing sunlight. The reduced exposure to direct sunlight results in significant changes in the tobacco leaves. They tend to have thinner veins and a more delicate, silky texture. Ecuador, for instance, has become renowned for its shade-grown tobacco. Instead of using artificial coverings, Ecuadorian farmers utilize natural cloud cover. The tobacco fields are situated at high elevations where clouds often hang low, providing a natural canopy that filters the sunlight. This unique environmental factor contributes to the distinctive qualities of Ecuadorian shade-grown tobacco, which is prized in the cigar industry for its unique characteristics.
