Sun Grown Tobacco

On the other hand, shade-grown tobacco is cultivated under cover, shielded from the sun’s direct rays. This is achieved by draping translucent coverings over the plants diffusing sunlight. The reduced exposure to direct sunlight results in significant changes in the tobacco leaves. They tend to have thinner veins and a more delicate, silky texture. Shade-grown tobacco is often sought for its aesthetic qualities, particularly for use as wrapper leaves in cigars due to its smoother and more refined appearance.

For instance, if you compare a Connecticut broadleaf (a sun-grown variety) with a Connecticut shade (a shade-grown variety), you might find it hard to believe they come from the same plant species. While shade-grown tobacco is less common in the United States, with traditional practices like Connecticut shade becoming rarer, other countries continue to embrace this method. Ecuador, for instance, has become renowned for its shade-grown tobacco. Instead of using artificial coverings, Ecuadorian farmers utilize natural cloud cover. The tobacco fields are situated at high elevations where clouds often hang low, providing a natural canopy that filters the sunlight. This unique environmental factor contributes to the distinctive qualities of Ecuadorian shade-grown tobacco, which is prized in the cigar industry for its unique characteristics.
