Some cigar houses chase speed. Selected Tobacco chases time. Nelson Alfonso’s company has announced the Petit Edition, a five-cigar collector’s set that gathers one cigar from each of its brands into a single box, and it slips two brand-new vitolas into the lineup. According to a press release from United Cigar Group, Selected Tobacco’s U.S. distributor, the set begins shipping to United Cigars retail partners in mid-November, right as the holiday season gets rolling.

If you followed our coverage of Selected Tobacco’s new Madrid facility last week, this release reads like the next chapter of the same story: patience, presentation and a portfolio built around aging.

The quick hits

  • What: Selected Tobacco Petit Edition, a five-cigar set
  • Who: Nelson Alfonso, founder of Selected Tobacco
  • Packaging: Deep-wine box with the Alfonso Guardian Angel coin; each cigar in its own aluminum tube
  • New sizes: Bandolero Premium Intrépidos and Nelson Nobles
  • Aging: At least four years post-roll, five for certain lines
  • Shipping: Mid-November 2026 to United Cigars retail partners

What’s in the box

The Petit Edition isn’t five sizes of one blend. It’s five different brands from the Selected Tobacco portfolio, one cigar each. Three are established vitolas, and two make their debut in this set. Per the press release, the lineup is:

  • Atabey Idolos (4 x 55)
  • Byron Petit Poemas (4 x 50)
  • Alfonso Añejo No. 1 (4 x 50)
  • Bandolero Premium Intrépidos (4 x 50), new size
  • Nelson Nobles (4 x 40), new size

Notice the theme: every cigar is four inches long. That makes the set a neat side-by-side tour of the house style, with ring gauges running from a slim 40 on the Nelson Nobles up to a chunky 55 on the Atabey Idolos. Shorter smokes also mean you can actually work through the five without clearing an entire weekend.

The two newcomers

For collectors, the headline is the pair of debut vitolas. The Bandolero Premium Intrépidos is a 4 x 50, and the Nelson Nobles is a 4 x 40. These are new sizes in existing lines rather than new blends, but a new format can change how a blend smokes, and for now this set is the only place they appear.

halfwheel, which covered the announcement, lists the Nelson Nobles as made at Tabacos de Costa Rica with an Ecuadorian Habano 2000 wrapper and filler from the Dominican Republic and Peru. halfwheel also notes this is the second month in a row Selected Tobacco has announced a sampler that includes two new cigars. Bandolero fans may remember our Bandolero Premium Bravos review; the Intrépidos gives that line a shorter option.

Four years minimum, five for some

The thread tying all five cigars together is aging. According to the release, every cigar in the set has gone through Selected Tobacco’s proprietary post-roll aging process, with a minimum of four years. Certain lines get at least five years, depending on what each blend needs.

halfwheel adds a bit of the how: after being rolled in Costa Rica, the cigars travel to Spain, where they rest in specialized aging rooms lined with five different varieties of cedar.

“For Nelson Alfonso, aging is an essential part of the work itself, the final character of a cigar develops long after it leaves the rolling table. That philosophy is reflected throughout the Selected Tobacco portfolio. Each cigar is united by a shared commitment to measured time.”

Selected Tobacco Petit Edition press release

That’s the same idea we saw in the Atabey Ritos gift set and its five-year-aged cigars. With this house, the clock is part of the recipe.

Packaging fit for a gift collection

Selected Tobacco has never been shy about presentation, and the Petit Edition keeps that going. The release describes a box with a deep-wine finish “reminiscent of a fine glass of Spanish Rioja,” trimmed with a pin-line decorative pattern. Front and center sits the Alfonso Guardian Angel coin, which the company calls the symbolic heart of Selected Tobacco. A magnetic tab holds the lid closed, and inside each cigar rests in its own cosmetic-grade aluminum tube.

Those tubes are color-matched to each brand, as you can see in the photo above: the white-and-gold Atabey, the illustrated Byron, the black Bandolero, the Alfonso Añejos tube and the copper-toned Nelson. On a shelf, it looks more like a bottle set than a sampler.

Who’s who: Selected Tobacco and United Cigars

Selected Tobacco was founded by Nelson Alfonso and is known for its distinctive portfolio, attention to luxury and commitment to post-roll aging. Its brands are Atabey, Byron, Alfonso, Bandolero and Nelson, and it develops its production, aging and presentation through its Madrid facility. We’ve also covered the Byron 175th Anniversary humidor set.

United Cigars distributes and manufactures premium cigars in the United States and handles distribution for Selected Tobacco. Its own brands include Firecracker, Red Anchor, Gold Star and its flagship, United. The name has deep roots: the original United Cigar began as a U.S. cigar store chain in 1901 and grew to nearly 3,000 shops.

The Cigar Guys’ take

We like a sampler that tells a story, and this one does. Instead of a random mix, the Petit Edition lines up five brands at the same four-inch length, all aged at least four years, so the differences come down to blend and ring gauge. Throw in two sizes that don’t exist anywhere else yet, and it’s easy to see why collectors will pay attention.

The bigger takeaway is consistency. A new Madrid facility in October, a collector’s set in November, and the same message both times: Selected Tobacco wants time to do the heavy lifting. We’ll keep an eye out for more details on the new Bandolero and Nelson sizes as the set reaches shops.
